Are you someone who gets excited at the flash of a feather or an unusual tweet in the hedgerow? Grab your binoculars and take a gander at Hurworth Burn reservoir, a few miles from Durham. It’s the perfect spot for bird enthusiasts.
One of the most awe-inspiring aspects of bird watching is migration, with birds flying in from thousands of miles away. Swoop in to check out the recent arrivals.
Hurworth Burn reservoir is a home to more than 230 species of birds. We’ve witnessed some delightful and rare feathered visitors here, including White-billed Divers, Black-crowned Night Heron, and the stately Common Crane.
The reservoir serves as a thriving habitat where various bird species find a home. Swans glide across the water, geese gather, ducks dive and dabble for food, and kingfishers perch on branches, ready to swoop down for a catch. It’s a real haven for birders and nature enthusiasts.
One ideal vantage point for observation is the raised track north of the car park, which offers a good bird’s-eye view of the reservoir along the east bank.
