Take off from Nest and fly over to Durham City for the day. You’ll find plenty of attractions and activities to enjoy. Historic landmarks, monuments and riverside walks await, plus, of course, Durham Cathedral, a World Heritage Site visited by tourists from around the world and a place of pilgrimage. This stunning edifice featured in the films Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and we have no doubt it will cast a spell on you!
There are lots of spots to discover amongst the historic cobblestone lanes – shops and cafés, as well as trails to explore along the river and up to Durham Castle, which has been occupied continuously since the 11th century. It’s now part of the university, although you can take a peek inside as part of a guided tour.
Take a trip into the past at Beamish – the world-famous open-air museum. Here you can immerse yourself in the history of people from the North East from the 1820s to the 1950s. Or visit Ushaw historic house and chapel, with its centuries of art and heritage, and acres of beautiful gardens and woodland, located just four miles from the city centre.
A great spot to picnic is Finchale Priory, an English Heritage attraction located on the banks of the River Wear, surrounded by beautiful woodland to explore. Or if gardens are your thing, plan a trip to the lovely walled gardens at Crook Hall, take in the views of the cathedral and castle from its tranquil seating areas, and visit the medieval hall.
A little further afield and just 12 miles south of Durham, you can explore the historic gardens at Auckland Castle with its acres of glorious parkland and gardens. Nice café, too. The town is also home to the UK’s first Faith Museum, the Spanish Gallery, and a fascinating array of mining art.
Flying a little further afield, you’ll discover market towns like Barnard Castle, home to The Bowes Museum. The French chateau-style buildings opened in 1892 to house the art collection of John Bowes and his French wife Joséphine. It’s full of fabulous artworks, hosts many exhibitions and also has a fab cafe. ‘Barney’ is also home to a great interiors shop, Niche and a fabulous bakery Rise You won’t be able to resist bringing back some freshly-baked bread or sweet treats to your Nest.
And while you’re in that neck of the woods, a visit to Raby Castle is always worth it. This quintessential castle with deer park and moat also has a forest playground, shop and cafe.
